Elon Musk Revolutionizing Mankind
تكنولوجيا APR 12, 2017

To those of you who don’t know Elon Musk, he is the current CEO of Tesla, one of the leading companies promoting electric cars and self-driving vehicles. He’s all for green energy and that’s wonderful, but apparently that’s not all he had in mind. Musk wanted to revolutionize our species by embedding electronics into our body, practically joining in on the wave that is cyborgs. The word Cyborg is a combination of the words cybernetics and organism; a word, according to TechTarget, invented by Manfred Clynes in the 60s “to describe the need for mankind to artificially enhance biological functions[…]".

To those of you who have seen Iron Man, the robotic suit that Tony Stark wears, that gives him superpowers to fight all evil and save mankind from utter disaster, is a form of “cyborging” for a good cause. Though technology has been advancing at quite a fast pace, Musk’s plan is not to turn us all into super humans and create an invincible army that would conquer the world, and even if it is, the near future is nowhere close to achieving that much, yet.

How is he doing it?

Well, long story short, Musk decided to privately fund a startup called Neuralink, which is an American-based company registered as a “medical research” firm, in order to help promote a new technology, the neural lace. The neural lace consists of planting nano-sized electrodes on top of brain neurons that would further enhance the brain’s functions such as critical thinking, enhanced thoughts and perception, etc… Basically connecting your brain to a computer in order to help it become faster and more efficient. Sounds like science fiction, right? Well according to TechWorld, this technology has already been tried on mice and has proven to be effective with very few negative effects.

What’s in it for me?

I’d hate to break your Easter egg but no, you’re not going to be the next Hancock fighting crime and escaping prison whenever you feel like it, maybe a few dozen decades from now. For the time-being, and with the technological capabilities that we have, putting aside your conspiracy theories and what technologies secret societies might have, Neuralink and other similar companies working with such a technology are aiming at medical goals. In other words, neural lace could help cure neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s, autism and other diseases. Some experts in the field predict that in the near future you might even be able to download thoughts into your brain. If scientists and engineers could, at some point, decode the brain signals and encode electric signals into the brain, we could eventually connect ourselves to computers and would be able to achieve way more than we are now. Imagine solving your math homework in a few milliseconds… Pretty cool huh?

So what’s next?

Again, this technology is in its very early stages, but when it comes to science, you never know when an accidental breakthrough might occur that would get us closer to our goal. For now, this technology is for medical purposes only that could later be upgraded to better help humanity. It would be faced with ethical and religious opposition as to how should we use such a technology? Is it contradicting with God and creation? We would face yet another danger that is the technology being acquired by the wrong people or it being used it for purposes it shouldn't be used for. Should this technology be visible in the near future, serious laws and regulations ought to be discussed to help prevent the disaster rather than contain it. We don’t want the mistake of pollution to happen again; pollution could have been prevented had we foreseen its disastrous outcomes, but no one bothered thinking that far.
