The first thing that comes to your mind when someone says "Nurse" is a person wearing a white uniform and holding a syringe. When you see someone in that uniform, you see purity, compassion and care.
Being a nurse has always meant more than white clothes. However it doesn’t seem to have the same good feeling that it used to. Nursing nowadays is so much more than just working at the bedside. When you decide to become a nurse, you are making a choice for a lifetime. The small stuff that attached you to nursing are the things that make you who you are. The care inside your heart, the love you give to others despite who they are, the tears you shed each day because you lost a patient and the smile you carry on your face while taking care of that old lady are the reasons you love your career. Nursing is more than just a job. Nursing is a mission. You go to work (hospitals, home care services...) and the best pay check you get is the smile of an old person telling you thank you for the care and attention you’re giving while everybody else refused to, or when you see a child smile again after weeks and weeks of tears.
Nursing is the privilege to work with people and forgetting who they are, where they come from or what they have been through. As a nurse, you do things for people and they will remember for a lifetime. They might forget your name or how you look like, but they will never forget how you made them feel. When you are a nurse, you see people at their worst and you still manage to make them feel good about it because that's who you are and what you are meant to do.
Being a nurse is so amazing! You have so much to do and so little time. You are the first to arrive and the last to leave. You will step into people's lives and you will make a difference. You will cry a lot, you will laugh a lot. You will learn how to be a human.
Your nursing career prepares you for anything. Once a nurse, you can handle just about anything! And during the 23 hours and 55 minutes when the doctor is not in the patient's room, you will be the one saving lives. You are a hero!
Happy nurses’ day!!
